China's Semiconductor Enterprises Go Global: A Series on Vietnam EMS Manufacturers (II) - Unigen Group

A Global Perspective on Unigen Group’s Hanoi Facility

This series, titled "2025 China Semiconductor Overseas Exploration: Vietnam Journey," is an original feature by China Exportsemi. It aims to provide Chinese chip companies with valuable insights into manufacturing options by closely examining Vietnam's EMS manufacturers.

As China’s semiconductor industry accelerates its global expansion, building a stable and high-quality overseas manufacturing system has become a critical challenge for chipmakers and system integrators. Vietnam is increasingly emerging as a pivotal hub in this strategic layout.

This series focuses on profiling Vietnam's leading EMS manufacturers to help Chinese enterprises comprehensively evaluate their potential value as partners. Today, we spotlight Unigen Group, a U.S.-based company with a global manufacturing network. Its facility in Hanoi not only demonstrates the local replication of world-class manufacturing capabilities but also offers operational strategies worth emulating.

Vietnam in the Global Manufacturing Network

Headquartered in California, USA, Unigen Group is an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider with a global footprint spanning the United States, China (Shenzhen, Chengdu), Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Established in 2012, Unigen Hanoi has grown into a key manufacturing hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Located in the Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park, the factory benefits from its position as a logistics hub, with proximity to Hanoi’s airport and the Port of Haiphong, ensuring efficient inbound raw material supply and outbound product delivery. Spanning nearly 43,000 square meters, with over 11,000 square meters of constructed facilities, the plant operates 12 SMT lines and has room to expand to more than 20 lines.

Unigen Hanoi excels in both new product introduction (NPI) and large-scale production, with a design that emphasizes flexible capacity to meet diverse customer lifecycle needs.

Factory Capability Matrix: From Assembly to Full-Process Services

Unigen’s manufacturing expertise spans multiple product categories, including SSDs, USB/eUSB devices, CF cards, industrial and consumer-grade PCBAs, and Box Build assembly for metal and plastic enclosures.

Beyond comprehensive manufacturing capabilities, Unigen Hanoi offers design-driven EMS services, engaging early in the customer design phase to provide cost optimization recommendations such as DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFA (Design for Assembly), helping clients reduce lifecycle costs.

Its production process includes full automation testing (SPI/AOI/AXI/ICT), functional testing, conformal coating, UV curing, rework, and failure analysis. Supported by a locally trained engineering team, the facility achieves a balance of rapid prototyping, flexible production, and stringent quality control.

End-to-End Quality Management and High Traceability Systems

Unigen Hanoi adheres to Total Quality Management (TQM) principles, aligning its process controls, personnel training, and data management with the requirements of European and American clients. Internally, it integrates Kaizen improvement mechanisms, Poka-Yoke error-proofing systems, and single-piece flow operations, emphasizing prevention over correction.

On the digital front, Unigen boasts robust traceability—every component, assembly process, test record, and repair history of each PCBA can be traced back to the serial number and updated in real-time to the ERP system, enabling remote monitoring and audits by clients.

For Chinese chip companies planning to establish "strategic factories" overseas, this system ensures confidence in outsourcing core module assembly and testing to Unigen.

From BOM Risk Assessment to Global Procurement Synergy

In terms of supply chain management, Unigen goes beyond merely executing client BOM lists, actively participating in BOM optimization and risk mitigation. Leveraging Oracle Cloud and Portus BI reporting systems, it provides:

- Component lifecycle analysis and alternative recommendations

- ECN (Engineering Change Notice) management and traceability support

- AML (Approved Manufacturer List) optimization suggestions

- Risk assessments and contingency plans for single-source components

Additionally, Unigen has procurement teams in China, Vietnam, and the United States, forming a globally synchronized procurement network. This "Turnkey" collaboration significantly reduces communication and delivery costs for Chinese companies lacking international procurement experience.

Reverse Logistics and Customer Service Support

Unigen Hanoi also features a complete reverse logistics and RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) management process, covering customer returns (in-warranty/out-of-warranty), Debug analysis, rework, and improvement recommendations.

The RMA handling cycle does not exceed 14 days, with support for remote and on-site services, along with detailed analysis reports to help clients optimize future designs. Through this mechanism, Unigen transcends the traditional EMS role of "assembly-only," extending its value to encompass the entire product lifecycle.

Why Should Chinese Companies Pay Attention to Unigen Hanoi?

Highly Mature Process Systems

Ideal for chipmakers, module suppliers, and system integrators with stringent requirements for yield rates, data integrity, and design collaboration.

Integrated Manufacturing, Engineering, and Supply Chain Services

Acts as a stable and reliable "overseas manufacturing hub" during the early stages of a client’s international expansion.

Flexible Capacity and Global Synergy

Capable of quickly adapting to changes in U.S.-China trade dynamics and client order adjustments, offering natural geopolitical risk mitigation.

Conclusion: Vietnam Manufacturing – More Than Just a Backup Plan

This series continues to explore Vietnam’s EMS industry landscape. Unigen Group, as a U.S.-based company with global experience, demonstrates how "replicable international capabilities" can take root in Southeast Asia through its Hanoi facility.

The China Exportsemi, under Yeehai Global Information Technology Co., Ltd., has launched a series of "China Innovation Solutions Overseas Business Exchange Tours." The upcoming "0621 Vietnam Tour" from June 21 to 26, 2025, will organize visits to EMS companies in Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Ninh, and other regions.
