ROHM Unveils New Generation Chip Resistors

As electronic devices become more powerful and electrification is accelerating, miniaturization and high performance of electronic components are becoming key trends in the development of the industry. ROHM Semiconductor has responded to this market demand with the MCRx family of general-purpose chip resistors designed to meet the stringent requirements for component miniaturization and performance enhancement in a wide range of applications.

With the global popularity of electric vehicles (xEVs), the demand for electronic components in the automotive industry has exploded. Complex electronic systems in automobiles, from power control to autonomous driving assistance, require a large number of high-performance and compact electronic components. At the same time, the field of industrial equipment is also moving towards greater functionality and efficiency, and the demand for miniaturized, high-performance electronic components is also urgent. ROHM's MCRx series of general-purpose chip resistors was created to address these market challenges.

The MCRx series consists of the high-power MCRS series and the low-resistance, high-power MCRL series. The MCRS series has succeeded in improving the power rating and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) characteristics by optimizing the internal structure and adopting new materials. Compared to conventional products, the MCRS series is able to accomplish the task in a smaller size while achieving the same functionality. The series offers a wide range of options from 0402 size (0.04" ×0.02")/1005 size (1.0 mm ×0.5 mm) to 2512 size (0.25 inch ×0.12 in.)/6432 size (6.4 mm ×3.2 mm), giving developers the flexibility to select the most suitable product based on the mounting space of the board, greatly improving the flexibility of circuit design and helping to create more compact and efficient circuits.

The MCRL series is a low-resistance variant of the MCRS series that covers the 0805 size (0.08" ×0.05")/2012 size (2.0 mm × 1.2 mm) to the 2512 size (0.25 inch ×0.12 in)/6432 size (6.4 mm ×3.2 mm), making it ideal for current sensing applications. Whether it's precisely monitoring current in the battery management system of an automotive or ensuring stable power transmission in the power management modules of industrial equipment, the MCRL series plays a key role.

In addition to the performance and size advantages, the MCRx series also excels in terms of production and reliability. The redesigned internal structure improves productivity, quality and reliability of products of all sizes. The AEC-Q200 automotive reliability standard meets the growing demand for electric vehicles, and has a promising market prospect in the field of communication infrastructure such as base stations and servers, as well as factory automation equipment. In addition, ROHM is committed to a long-term stable supply of these products, which is essential for applications with long service life, such as industrial equipment, ensuring a stable supply of electronic components and reliable performance over long periods of operation.

ROHM is also continuing to expand the MCRx series. The MCRS series will be available in size 0201 (0.024 in × 0.012 in.) and 0603 size (0.6 mm × 0.3 mm) capable of withstanding temperatures up to +155°C to meet some of the most demanding temperature applications. At the same time, the MCRE series will soon be available in fully lead-free 01005 (0.016 in × 0.008 in.) / 0402 (0.4 mm × 0.2 mm) size, which meets the requirements of environmental regulations and the market demand for further miniaturization.

Going forward, ROHM will continue to focus on developing and manufacturing products that meet the diverse needs of customers around the world. As a resistor company, ROHM understands the importance of resistors in the field of electronic components, and will continue to expand its resistor product line to improve the level of miniaturization and reliability of components while ensuring a stable supply over the long term. Through continuous technological innovation, ROHM aims to strengthen its market position, lead the electronic components industry in a more advanced direction, and continue to contribute to the miniaturization and performance of electronic devices.
