Who Leads the Battery Race

Just over halfway through 2025, the battery industry is already full of gunsmoke. From CATL's 587Ah giant energy storage cells, to BYD's "megawatt flash charge" blade batteries, to high-density, fast-charging and high-safety batteries from Envision Power, REPT BATTERO, PHYLION Power and other manufacturers, a technology competition around the "next-generation battery cell standard" is heating up rapidly. In the face of the explosion of demand in the field of energy storage and power batteries, enterprises have competed for the dominance of the industry with core technology breakthroughs - battery cell melee and rekindled the war.

Energy storage: the space revolution triggered by giant battery cells

In the energy storage market, CATL has undoubtedly grabbed the headlines again. On June 10, CATL officially launched the next generation of 587Ah energy storage cells at its "Energy Storage 587 Technology Day". The battery cell has an energy density of 434Wh/L, which is 10% higher than the previous generation, and the system integration efficiency is increased by 25%, and the ultimate security protection is achieved through the "three-dimensional defense system" - "no fire and no explosion" in extreme scenarios such as thermal runaway, overcharge, and acupuncture.

Its significance lies not only in the capacity upgrade, but also in the compatibility of high safety and high efficiency: the initial RTE is as high as 96.5%, which opens up a new imagination space for energy storage systems to reduce costs and increase efficiency. This battery cell not only reflects CATL's accumulation of technology thickness, but also reveals its competitive strategy of "mass production first, then layout" in large storage scenarios.

Not to be outdone, there is also long-term momentum. Its 530Ah energy storage cells, which can store 1.6 kWh of electricity per unit, have a staggering 12,000 cycle lives, and are scheduled to achieve mass production in 2025. This performance will undoubtedly attract the attention of large-scale energy storage project purchasers. Compared with CATL's leading system efficiency, Envision Power focuses on life and capacity limits, betting on long-term projects and overseas high-return markets.

Power battery: the battle between fast charging and high integration

The power battery track focuses on the "triple game" of energy density, space utilization and fast charging performance. In May, REPT BATTERO announced that its 54Ah top battery cell took the lead in passing the new version of the mandatory standard for electric vehicle batteries (GB 38031-2025), making a big fuss about structural compression and space optimization. By shortening the tabs and compressing the headroom to 8 mm, the space utilization rate is improved by 7%, gaining valuable integration advantages in size-constrained PHEV platforms.

Some people also say that it is BYD that really brings power batteries into the "next generation of fast charging era". The megawatt flash charging blade battery released in March made its debut, supporting 10C ultra-high rate fast charging and 1000A current input, which can replenish 20 kilometers in 10 seconds and range 400 kilometers in 5 minutes. This performance directly rewrote the definition of "charging anxiety", and also further expanded the scope of blade batteries in the new round of market promotion. It is the first to be installed on the two flagship models of Han L and Tang L, aiming directly at the high-end electric mobility market.

Scenario breakdown: The rise of two-wheeled electrified tracks

At the same time, PHYLION Power has set its sights on the traditional but huge potential market of two-wheeled vehicles. At its 2025 new product launch conference, it launched the ultra-lithium S30 and FAR series lithium batteries for the two-wheeled electric vehicle field, covering daily commuting to long-distance battery life scenarios. Among them, the FAR 7230 battery provides a 72V high-voltage platform, supports 1C discharge, has a range of up to 130 kilometers, and weighs only 22.5kg.

Who can lead the next generation of battery cells?

The essence of this "battery cell melee" is an epochal proposition: in the next round of new energy reform, who can formulate new industry standards? From the perspective of the current technology path and strategic focus, major enterprises have their own chances of success:

1.                CATL takes the path of high-density and system-wide synergy, and tries to take the lead in building an "infrastructure-level standard" for energy storage cells by virtue of its capacity scale and technological ecological advantages.

2.                BYD relies on the advantages of vehicle-electricity integration to push the blade battery to the extreme performance boundary, and the fast-charging technology may redefine the user experience of the power battery;

3.                Envision Power and REPT BATTERO have entered the market segment in terms of cell size, life and cost control with differentiated play;

4.                PHYLION Power occupies a first-mover advantage in the two-wheeled vehicle market, and seizes the public's short-distance travel needs through the combination of high safety + high performance.

Summary: No standard set, no winner yet

It is foreseeable that 2025 will become a critical year for the battle between battery cell technology route and industry standards. From PHEVs to energy storage, from fast charging to ultra-long life, the evolution of various battery cell products is accelerating, and the competition and integration between different scenarios are becoming more and more intense. What can really lead the "next generation trend" is not only the enterprise with a leading technology, but the leader who can turn the technology into systematic application and truly achieve large-scale implementation.
